PSHE

At St John’s, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education—incorporating statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)—is designed to support children's personal development, wellbeing, and safety in an evolving modern world.

Our curriculum aligns with the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme and statutory DfE guidelines, structured around four core strands:

  1. Myself and Relationships

    • Self-Awareness & Emotional Literacy: Understanding emotions, building self-esteem, and developing resilience.

    • Relationships & Belonging: Nurturing healthy family dynamics, respectful friendships, empathy, and anti-bullying awareness (including cyberbullying).

  2. Citizenship & Communities

    • Rights & Responsibilities: Exploring democracy, rules, human rights, and social justice.

    • Living in the Wider World: Celebrating diversity, challenging stereotypes, fostering inclusion, and understanding global citizenship.

  3. Economic Wellbeing & Financial Literacy

    • Financial Capability: Managing money, saving, making informed financial choices, and understanding the role of money in modern society.

    • Aspirations & Enterprise: Developing teamwork, problem-solving, and career awareness.

  4. Healthy and Safer Lifestyles

    • Health & Physical Wellbeing: Physical activity, balanced nutrition, personal hygiene, and sleep habits.

    • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE): Age-appropriate body knowledge, personal boundaries, body autonomy, navigating puberty, and understanding change and growth.

    • Managing Risk & Substance Education: Drug, alcohol, and tobacco awareness, personal safety, emergency response, and risk management across physical and digital environments.

The Importance of Online Safety & Digital Wellbeing

In an increasingly connected world, Online Safety is integral to our PSHE provision at St John’s. We empower children to navigate digital environments confidently, responsibly, and safely.

Through structured learning scenarios and digital citizenship teaching, pupils learn to:

  • Protect Personal Data: Understand privacy settings, digital footprints, and the importance of safeguarding personal information online.

  • Build Healthy Digital Habits: Recognize the impact of screen time on physical and mental health, practice self-regulation, and establish a balanced relationship with technology.

  • Identify Risks & Seek Help: Recognize cyberbullying, online grooming, harmful or inappropriate content, and misinformation, knowing how to use reporting tools and seek trusted adult support.

  • Foster Respectful Online Relationships: Apply the principles of kindness, consent, and respect to digital communications, treating others online as they would offline.

Purpose and Impact

Through this comprehensive curriculum, children at St John’s develop essential life skills, critical thinking, and social-emotional literacy. By analyzing real-life scenarios, engaging with age-appropriate case studies, and practicing decision-making strategies, pupils are prepared to grow into informed, empathetic, and resilient global citizens.
